Stornoway, Isle of Lewis

Stornoway (or Steòrnabhagh in Gaelic) the main population and administrative centre for the Western Isles (Na h-Eileanan Siar), at dusk. Although still a major fishing port that industry has declined in recent years leaving the harbour less busy. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (the Western Isles Council) has done much in the past to attract tourists to the town and islands. A strict Calvinist approach means that no shops open on Sundays in the Protestant Isle of Lewis. Attempts at change (for example by running a Sunday ferry) are met with stiff opposition from groups such as the Lords Day Observance Society.
